Our Redhill Tree Removal Project – Step by Step
With several trees to remove and limited access to the rear garden, the order we carried the work out in was important. We wanted to keep the working area organised rather than filling the garden with branches and timber.
Walking the Site Before Starting
When we arrived, we went through the garden with the customer once more before unloading the main equipment.
We checked the trees, fence line, nearby property, neighbouring gardens and the narrow access running alongside the house.
One thing that was obvious straight away was that the side passage was going to dictate how we managed the waste. Larger machinery couldn't simply be driven into the garden and there wasn't room to carry very long sections of timber around the corners.
That meant branches would need to be processed as we worked and larger stem sections cut down to manageable sizes before being taken out.
Protecting the Garden and Preparing the Work Area
Before any cutting started, we cleared the area immediately around the trees and protected the surfaces and planting that needed to remain.
We set out climbing ropes and equipment and created a clear route for material to leave the garden.
The wood chipper was positioned where it could be accessed from the front of the property, which meant branches could be brought through the side passage and processed as the job progressed.
Getting this organised beforehand made a huge difference later in the day.
Dismantling the Conifers From the Top Down
Because the conifers were positioned directly along the boundary, there wasn't enough room to simply fell them in full lengths.
Our climber worked through the trees progressively, removing branches and reducing the height before dealing with the main stems.
This gave us much more control over where everything landed and prevented material falling into neighbouring gardens or onto the surrounding fencing.
Controlled dismantling is often the safest option during residential tree removal , especially where trees have outgrown fairly confined gardens.
Working Through the Row One Section at a Time
Once the taller growth had been removed, we continued working along the boundary rather than stripping all of the trees at once.
This allowed us to maintain a manageable working area and meant the ground crew could stay on top of the large amount of material being produced.
Branches were carried through the side passage and chipped, while heavier timber was cut down further before being removed.
On a job involving several established conifers, this part of the project can take just as long as the actual cutting.
Grinding Out the Remaining Stumps
Once the trees had been taken down, the customer didn't want a line of old stumps left behind.
They wanted the option of replanting and changing the border in the future, so we brought our stump grinder into the garden through the same narrow access.
Each stump was ground down below the surrounding ground level, removing the large solid bases that would otherwise have remained across the border.
Combining tree removal and stump grinding in the same project saves the customer having to arrange another contractor once the trees have gone.
Clearing and Tidying the Garden
There was a lot of material to deal with by the end of the removal, so clearing as we went helped keep the final clean-up manageable.
The remaining chip, small branches and sawdust were collected, the area around the old tree line was tidied and the access path was swept.
The customer didn't have to organise skips or deal with piles of tree waste after we'd gone.

When Cutting Back Is No Longer the Best Option
We don't automatically recommend removing trees just because they've become large.
In plenty of gardens, tree cutting and pruning can bring growth back under control and allow a tree to remain.
With this particular row of conifers, however, the homeowner wanted to solve the problem permanently rather than return to regular heavy reductions.
The trees were occupying a large amount of the boundary, blocking daylight and having an increasing effect on neighbouring gardens.
Once we discussed the amount of work required to keep them at a much smaller size, the customer decided removal suited their plans for the garden better.

Most importantly, despite the amount of material removed and the restricted access, the surrounding fencing and garden were left intact and the site was cleared before we left.
